A wave of nausea hit me. The basement had always been a dusty storage space\u2014what business would Jacob have down there with another woman?<\/p>\n

Determined to get answers, I confronted him that night. He laughed off Maggie\u2019s words, claiming she was imagining things. “She probably saw something on TV and got confused,” he reassured me, his smile forced.<\/p>\n
