Not all of these moments are pleasant, but they often leave us with valuable lessons—or at least an interesting story to tell later.
The Story:
It was a regular workday, and I was at a lunch meeting with colleagues at a nice restaurant. The conversation was light, and I was just settling into my meal when my eyes suddenly landed on a familiar figure across the room. It was my wife.
At first, I felt a flicker of confusion. Just twenty minutes earlier, she had texted me, saying she was at home, relaxing.
That text had included a casual check-in and a comment about unwinding after a long morning
Yet here she was, sitting at a table just a few feet away from me, completely unaware of my presence.
I was about to call out her name when I noticed something strange. She was completely engrossed in her phone, a small smile playing on her lips as she typed.
The moment felt oddly surreal. Instead of interrupting her, I hesitated, watching her from a distance, trying to make sense of what I was seeing.
Then, my phone buzzed. My heart skipped a beat as I pulled it out of my pocket. It was a message from her.
When I opened it, my stomach twisted into knots. She had just sent me a selfie—taken from what looked like our bedroom—wearing a face mask.
The message read: “Can’t wait for you to come home! xoxo.”

I didn’t waste another second. Pushing my chair back, I stood up and walked straight to her table.
As soon as she looked up and met my eyes, all the color drained from her face. In that moment, I knew—whatever explanation she had, it wasn’t going to be good.
