During a tense meeting in the Oval Office in February, US Vice President JD Vance’s cousin openly criticized him and President Donald Trump for their “belittling” remarks about Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
In an interview with the BBC, Nate Vance, who volunteered with the Ukrainian military for three years following Russia’s full-scale invasion, expressed his disappointment with the situation. He stated that he was “not happy” with how the meeting played out, emphasizing that “there’s a certain level of decorum” he expects from political leaders, especially when cameras are present.
According to The Guardian, Nate Vance’s remarks followed previous accusations that Trump and JD Vance were “useful idiots” for Russian President Vladimir Putin in their approach to the war.
The February meeting, which was live-streamed, quickly turned controversial. Trump warned Zelensky about “gambling with World War Three” and threatened to withdraw US support unless an agreement was reached. JD Vance, on the other hand, criticized Zelensky for not showing enough gratitude for U.S. aid and accused him of being “disrespectful” by airing his concerns in public.
Nate Vance pushed back on this criticism, pointing out that “Zelensky thanks everyone who supports Ukraine in his daily or nightly address.” While he acknowledged that his cousin and Trump had been working against Zelensky’s initiatives for years, he argued it was unreasonable to expect Zelensky to show “deference” to Trump.
As tensions escalated, a scheduled news conference was canceled, and Zelensky was asked to leave the White House. The Trump administration then halted military assistance, satellite imagery, and intelligence sharing to Ukraine.
Another controversy arose when a reporter criticized Zelensky for not wearing a suit to the meeting. Since the war began, Zelensky has worn military attire to show solidarity with his troops. Nate Vance dismissed the criticism as trivial, saying, “Who cares? It’s a foolish hill to die on.” He also pointed out the inconsistency, noting that Elon Musk often visits the Oval Office dressed casually, in T-shirts and baseball caps.
Nate Vance described the Oval Office encounter as “an ambush of absolute bad faith” but referred to his cousin as “a good guy, intelligent” in a separate interview with Le Figaro.
He acknowledged that his position was unusual given his long-standing Republican affiliation, stating, “Since I’ve always been a Republican, this is a strange stance for me to adopt. But I’m passionate about it, and I believe we’re approaching this problem incorrectly.”
When asked how Americans might view the exchange, he estimated that 20% would feel “disheartened.” He also warned against the dangers of isolationism, recalling how it led to World War I and World War II.
After the meeting, Zelensky called the conversation “regrettable” and suggested making another attempt to resolve the issue. Meanwhile, the US continues its diplomatic efforts with both Russia and Ukraine to reach a settlement in the conflict.
Last week, Trump commented that he was “doing very well with Russia,” but admitted that things were becoming “more difficult” with Ukraine.
