Hope had been juggling a demanding job and two young children, Tessa (5) and Logan (3), while recently moving into a modest ranch-style house with her husband, Julian. Despite their best efforts, “calm” had remained elusive, and their marriage was feeling the strain. They had hired a young caretaker named Bethany, who had been a godsend—until one night, when everything changed.
After a long, tiring Friday at work, Hope arrived home early to find the lights off and the house oddly quiet. When she entered, there was no sign of the usual chaos, and no greetings from the kids. As she walked through the house, she heard water running from the bathroom—a sound that made her tense. Bethany was in the shower, which seemed odd. She had never done that before.
Hope was shocked to find Bethany stepping out of the shower, soaked and flustered. “I didn’t know you’d be home so early,” Bethany stammered. Hope, both confused and angry, demanded to know why she was showering at their house. Bethany explained that Tessa had spilled milk on her, and Julian had given her permission to rinse off while the kids napped.
Hope’s frustration lingered, but she was relieved the kids were safe. Julian soon came home and confirmed his actions, explaining that he had allowed Bethany to shower because she was covered in milk. He defended his decision as an act of courtesy, though Hope found it unusual that he was so relaxed about crossing boundaries.
That night, after putting the kids to bed, Hope couldn’t shake the unease. Julian’s behavior was out of character, and she found herself questioning the nature of his relationship with Bethany. The next day, Hope texted Bethany to clarify boundaries, but she received a reply that made her even more uneasy: Bethany was looking for a second job.
A few days later, Hope came home early and found the kids playing outside with Bethany and Julian. They were laughing together, and while it seemed innocent, the sight filled Hope with jealousy and suspicion. When she confronted Julian about his early return, he explained it away as a flexible schedule from work, but Hope’s doubts lingered.
Determined to get answers, Hope secretly set up a baby monitor in the living room. Later, she saw a comforting hug between Julian and Bethany. Though it seemed innocent, the closeness still made her uneasy.
