Authorities in Santa Fe, New Mexico, are continuing their investigation into the deaths of acclaimed actor Gene Hackman, 95, and his wife, classical pianist Betsy Arakawa, 65. The couple was found deceased in their home on February 26, 2025, along with one of their three dogs. The circumstances surrounding their deaths have raised suspicions, leading to a thorough and ongoing investigation.
The bodies of Hackman and Arakawa were discovered by maintenance workers performing a welfare check after they noticed that the front door to the residence was open and unsecured. Hackman was found near the entryway, while Arakawa was located in a bathroom.
A prescription pill bottle was found near Arakawa’s body, with pills scattered on the floor. Additionally, a space heater was positioned close to her, sparking questions about its potential role in the incident. Among the couple’s three dogs, one was found deceased, while the remaining two were healthy and alive.
Initial assessments have ruled out carbon monoxide poisoning and significant gas leaks as possible causes of death. The Santa Fe Fire Department and the New Mexico Gas Company conducted a preliminary investigation and discovered a minor gas leak near a stove burner, which registered 0.33 percent gas in the air.
However, experts have determined that this level was too low to be fatal. Tests also showed no signs of carbon monoxide poisoning, further eliminating the possibility of an undetected leak being responsible for their deaths.
Autopsy results revealed no external trauma on either Hackman or Arakawa. Authorities are currently awaiting the results of toxicology tests, which could take several months. In the meantime, investigators are carefully examining personal belongings, medical records, and other household evidence in an effort to determine the cause of the couple’s deaths.
Forensic experts have suggested a number of theories regarding the deaths. One theory is that Hackman, who had a history of heart disease and a pacemaker, may have suffered a cardiac arrest after discovering his wife’s body, leading to his own sudden death.
Another possibility is that Arakawa experienced a fatal accident while trying to assist her husband. Investigators are exploring all potential explanations as they await further details from the autopsy and toxicology reports.
