However, Zelensky expressed optimism about mending his relationship with the American president, while also stating that Ukraine remains committed to securing a peace deal with Russia. “We are ready for peace, but we need to be in a strong position,” he stated. “We need to ensure that our army is strong, our partners are with us, and that we have security guarantees.”
Regarding a deal for Ukraine’s rare earth minerals, which was canceled after the Oval Office dispute, Zelensky called it a crucial step towards security guarantees. He stressed the importance of his nation’s resilience, saying, “Nobody will stop, because people fear Putin will return tomorrow.”
Zelensky also responded to comments from Senator Lindsey Graham, who suggested that he should consider stepping down as president. “This decision can only be made by the people of Ukraine,” he said, emphasizing that only Ukrainians have the right to choose their leader through democratic elections.
When pressed about whether he would step down to facilitate a peace deal, Zelensky asserted, “No, I’m not sure such proposals are a good idea. If the U.S. supports NATO, that’s enough for Ukraine.” He added that if people are unhappy with him, that’s their right, but reminded the interviewer that elections are a matter for the people of Ukraine, just as American voters choose their president.
Zelensky concluded by saying, with respect to Senator Graham, “Only Ukrainians will decide who leads them.” However, his current position is complicated by the fact that, since the conflict began, Zelensky declared martial law and suspended elections in Ukraine.
